Book Club! - new date

We welcome you to join us on Wednesday, June 29th, 2022 at 7pm in the Tower 2 Multi-Purpose Room or via Zoom to discuss the book, “Vanderbilt: The Rise and Fall of an American Dynasty” by Anderson Cooper, Katherine Howe, et al.

“The Vanderbilt name conjures up images of wealth and high society, and in this glittering biography Anderson Cooper and historian Katherine Howe give us a rare insider’s view of his storied family—its heirs and spouses, affairs, and rivalries—and how a great fortune was made, fought over, spent, and eventually lost. The story of the Vanderbilts is a quintessential American fairy tale that began with Cooper’s savvy but ruthless great-great-great-grandfather, nicknamed the Commodore, who amassed a tremendous fortune in his lifetime, one that by the 21st century would be gone.

In Vanderbilt, readers are invited into the lavish balls, opulent homes, and fascinating lives of the generations who followed the Commodore, culminating with Gloria Vanderbilt, Cooper’s mother, whose story is told with extra care and compassion. Rich in detail and personality, Vanderbilt beautifully transports readers back in time to the glory days of the Gilded Age, and the subsequent scandals, successes, and excesses of a true American dynasty.” Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor.

We welcome you to join us on Wednesday, May 18th, 2022 at 7pm in the Tower 2 Multi-Purpose Room or via Zoom to discuss the book “The Girl with the Louding Voice” by Abi Daré.

“The unforgettable, inspiring story of a teenage girl growing up in a rural Nigerian village who longs to get an education so that she can find her “louding voice” and speak up for herself. The Girl with the Louding Voice is a simultaneously heartbreaking and triumphant tale about the power of fighting for your dreams.  Despite the seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her path, Adunni never loses sight of her goal of escaping the life of poverty she was born into so that she can build the future she chooses for herself – and help other girls like her do the same.  Her spirited determination to find joy and hope in even the most difficult circumstances imaginable will ‘break your heart and then put it back together again’ (Jenna Bush Hager on The Today Show) even as Adunni shows us how one courageous young girl can inspire us all to reach for our dreams…and maybe even change the world.” – Amazon

April Book Club!

We welcome you to join on Wednesday, April 20th, 2022 at 7pm in the Tower 2 Multi-Purpose Room or via Zoom to discuss the book “The Trial” by Franz Kafka.

“Franz Kafka (1883-1924) has been called everything from a modernist to an existentialist, a fantasy writer to a realist. His work almost stands alone as its own subgenre, and the adjective ‘Kafkaesque’ – whose meaning, like the meaning of Kafka’s work, is hard to pin down – has become well-known even to people who have never read a word of Kafka’s writing. Perhaps inevitably, he is often misinterpreted as being a gloomy and humorless writer about nightmarish scenarios, when this at best conveys only part of what he is about.

A novel of such ambiguity will inevitably lend itself to a diversity of interpretation, but in The Trial you can at least be sure to find every element of storytelling now defined as Kafkaesque. Josef K., our protagonist, is unexpectedly arrested on the morning of his 30th birthday. The agents who arrest him are unidentified, the agency they work for is unspecified, and the crime for which he has been accused is unknown. When he is released, shortly after, he is told to await further instruction. So begins the manic and emotionless trial of a man beholden to the whims of an unknown force, and his painstaking attempts to find a way out of this existential maze. The Trial brings into focus the absurdity of life, our universal fear of judgement, and one ultimate question: how much of this endless maze will you explore before you accept the fate life has bestowed upon you?” – Amazon

February Book Club!

We welcome you to join us on Wednesday, February 16th, 2022 at 7pm via Zoom to discuss the book “The Snow Child” by Eowyn Ivey. This is an open event for the residents & their guests who would like to join us.

“In this magical debut, a couple’s lives are changed forever by the arrival of a little girl, wild and secretive, on their snowy doorstep.

Alaska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead, and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart — he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm; she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season’s first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning the snow child is gone — but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees.

This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.” – Amazon
